Benjamin 4 months old

A note from Sam & Ashley:

Sam has been home for a month now and continues to work hard in Physical Therapy several times a week.  He remains focused and driven to succeed at recovery.  While talking to his good friend, Sarah, the other day on the phone (via his nifty bluetooth headset--thanks Mike) she commented on how nice it is that he can spend so much time at home with Ashley and Benjamin.  Sam replied, "Whatever!  Just because I'm paralyzed doesn't mean I'm gonna sit around on my butt the rest of my life!"  Upon further reflection, he added, "Ok, so maybe I am gonna sit on my butt for a while, but I'm not gonna sit around the house; that butt's going places!"

From Ashley:

We love having Sam home.  He makes Benjamin laugh.  He teases Whitney relentlessly (Whitney is my little sister who is helping us out this summer).  Last, but not least, he makes us all stronger.  Literally.  We're getting some great biceps and quads.

Whitney and I did a car transfer ourselves last week--for the first time--without the help of any big strong men.  One day one of our aides didn't come to take Sam to therapy so Whitney took matters into her own hands.  When the aide arrived a few hours later and inquired about how she was able to transfer Sam, Whitney said, flexing her biceps "I got him with these big guns."  (For those of you who don't know Whitney, she's about 5'4".)

Sam is getting stronger, too.  One month ago, he couldn't set the right brake on his wheelchair.  Now he can put the brake on and take it off with ease.  He also figured out how to open the fridge using a towel, his teeth, and a little creativity.   In therapy he's working on the preliminary skill set required for rolling over and transferring himself.  Sam is in a tight race with Benjamin to see who can roll over first.  As of now, Benjamin seems to have a slight advantage, although Sam's motivation is clearly higher.  Whenever Benjamin gets frustrated on his tummy he just sucks on his hand.  Silly boy.

Sam & Ashley,
I've known your Father/father-in-law, Chuck, since we were in jr. high school, there was no such thing as "Middle School!" If he tells you any stories about our adventures, as youths, they're all lies! I was the perfect child! Asley, I know you don't remember me because you were, maybe, five years old the last time I saw you? I'm getting so old I can't remember either.
Just wanted to write and say hello and to let you know you're in my thoughts and prayers. Sam, it sounds like you're making great progress and have a positive outlook on your future. What a beautiful boy Benjamin is. Sam, sorry Benjamin beat you on the rollover thing.
Don't know if Chuck told you that I've been a quad since 1967, going on 41 years. Where does the time go? As you two are finding out, life has its challenges and it sounds like you two are meeting this head on, with positive attitudes and a solid family and friend base, to help you. If it weren't for my family and friends I don't know what I would have done becauswe I had a "Poor Me" attitude. People still ask me how I continue to keep on keeping on, after so many years and it still boils down to family, friends and a positive attitude. I've been blessed with two wonderful children, Doug 25 and Megan 20, and a best friend for a wife. Lori and I just celebrated our 31st anniversary. God bless Lori for putting up with me for all these years. Anyway I can go on and on...
Sam, Ashley, if you want to talk please feel free to call. I have a toll free number, in my office and I'm here 8-5 Monday - Friday. 888-840-1089. I think it's much easier to talk on the phone than typing back and forth. I'm worn out.

God Bless You Two and your beautiful Bejamin!
