Better than Jenny Craig PDF Print E-mail

Sam had a great week in physical therapy and rehabilitation.  He worked so hard that each night the nurses put ice packs on his sore shoulder muscles.  Much of Sam's therapy focuses on range of motion with his arms. He's regaining strenth, re-learning motor skills and occupational tasks, such as eating.  Sam fed himself breakfast this week.  It's a good thing he's learning to feed himself since he was weighed on Saturday.  Sam was shocked to learn that he's lost over 20 pounds in 3 weeks.  In typical Sam fashion, he said, "Well, I'll just have to start a weight loss program.  It will be better than Jenny Craig.  All you have to do is NOT move your legs for three weeks and eat hospital food."

Sam has also enjoyed wheelchair races down hospital hallways   He's amazed at how fast he  hauls in 4th gear (luckily, the nurses aren't allowed to kick him out).  His wheelchair is no 350z, but it's satisfying his need for speed right now.

More updates and photos to come!  We have so much appreciated your comments, thoughts, and concerns.  Thank you!

A friend of mine....
written by Kally, March 17, 2008
Ash-

I put the information about Sam on my blog and a friend of mine from BYU contacted me. You might remember her....Marianne Maycock- she was in the Heather Cove ward with us... Anyway, she works at a rehab center in Atlanta that specializes in Spinal Cord injuries. I'll post her email to me below. Let me know if you have any interest. Tell Sam he's a trooper and we're still praying for you both! I love you!

Kally,

This is Marianne (Maycock) Dunn from freshman year-in case you were a little confused, but I actually stumbled upon your blog and saw the story of your roommate's husband, Sam. I'm so sorry to hear about the accident and hope that he is doing better now.

I'm assuming they live in Utah, but I guess I took particular interest because I am currently working as a therapist at a Catastrophic Care Hospital in Atlanta right now that specializes in Spinal Cord Injuries. It is called the Shepherd Center and is one of the top rated hospital/rehabilitation centers in the U.S. for spinal cord injuries. I realize it is across the country, but most of the patients we admit are from out of state. Here is the website http://www.shepherd.org and please let them know if they have any questions they are more than welcome to get a hold of me!

I hope you all are doing well and please give them my best!

-Marianne

So glad to hear that Sam is doing so much better. I agree; miracles happen--and more often that people believe. Please let us know if there's anything we can do. I hope that you and baby Benji are well and enjoying lots of time w/ Sam hopefully.

Sam--
Keep up the great work with doing rehab and physical therapy. We know that you can do it! You've done so much already. You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers!

Prayers from Madison
written by Stephanie Gruchow, March 27, 2008
Sam & Ashley,

Sam last time I saw you was probably in high school. It's been a pretty long time. Someone from Monona passed the web link along to me, & I wanted to let you both know that my prayers - and the prayers of my church family here in Madison - are with you & your family. God does have a plan through this, and it will be amazing. Keep focused on the Lord.

2 Cor. 4:16-18 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

Love in Christ,
Stephanie
Wish we were there.

Sam and Ashley,
We thought that we'd be able to see you several times this week, but they moved us to LDS Hospital. Baby Eli was born last Thursday and has decided that he likes the peace and quite of the hospital and wants to stay. He'll probably be here another week while he learns to breathe on his own.

Aunt Carol has been keeping us updated on you. We are so grateful to hear of the progress and improvement. You continue to be in our prayers.

Love,
Dave and Heather
