Benjamin 4 months old

A note from Sam & Ashley:

Sam has been home for a month now and continues to work hard in Physical Therapy several times a week.  He remains focused and driven to succeed at recovery.  While talking to his good friend, Sarah, the other day on the phone (via his nifty bluetooth headset--thanks Mike) she commented on how nice it is that he can spend so much time at home with Ashley and Benjamin.  Sam replied, "Whatever!  Just because I'm paralyzed doesn't mean I'm gonna sit around on my butt the rest of my life!"  Upon further reflection, he added, "Ok, so maybe I am gonna sit on my butt for a while, but I'm not gonna sit around the house; that butt's going places!"

On Wednesday, May 21st, Sam finally came home.  We are thrilled to all be living under the same roof again.  In fact, Benjamin was so excited that he woke up every hour that first night.  It has been a big adjustment for all.  Thankfully, we're not in this one alone.

The night Sam came home, his friend Kasey came to help set up the lift and install the shower chair.  Ben and Jill brought dinner, and many other friends worked hard sorting clothes for the yard sale.

Visiting Sam at the Hospital, May 7th

A note from Ashley:

The last couple of months have been so busy that we haven't even updated the website!!   Hopefully this time-line with a few fun facts will give you an idea of what Sam has been doing.  We're really happy about his progress and excited for him to come home in just two weeks.

Better than Jenny Craig PDF Print E-mail

Sam had a great week in physical therapy and rehabilitation.  He worked so hard that each night the nurses put ice packs on his sore shoulder muscles.  Much of Sam's therapy focuses on range of motion with his arms. He's regaining strenth, re-learning motor skills and occupational tasks, such as eating.  Sam fed himself breakfast this week.  It's a good thing he's learning to feed himself since he was weighed on Saturday.  Sam was shocked to learn that he's lost over 20 pounds in 3 weeks.  In typical Sam fashion, he said, "Well, I'll just have to start a weight loss program.  It will be better than Jenny Craig.  All you have to do is NOT move your legs for three weeks and eat hospital food."

Sam has also enjoyed wheelchair races down hospital hallways   He's amazed at how fast he  hauls in 4th gear (luckily, the nurses aren't allowed to kick him out).  His wheelchair is no 350z, but it's satisfying his need for speed right now.

More updates and photos to come!  We have so much appreciated your comments, thoughts, and concerns.  Thank you!
